The hard drive was invented in an IBM research lab
By an unremembered scientist with no idea what he'd done
With capacities in megabytes and random access storage
It was clear a whole new era had begun
The micro and the PC brought computing to the masses
They did not have a hard drive, but that kept the prices light
And a host of applications strove to fit within their limits
With their program sizes whittled to the byte
The XT brought a hard drive to the personal computer
And the 10 MB it shipped with was a wonder to behold
The populace was dazzled by its limitless dimensions
And several million packages were sold
But developers grew lazy and they fell into temptation
When the drive provided room in which their programs could expand
And a frantic race was started between storage space and data
As the problem started getting out of hand
Now the trend is well established, towards 'bigger, better, faster'
As we cross each new horizon and the road goes ever on
But I watch my hard drive fill with thirty gigabytes of bloatware
And I wonder where the good old days have gone
